Joseph Raponey, 87, of 37 Barnes St., Bristol, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at Bristol Hospital; he was the widower of Anne (Venturo) Raponey. Joseph was born in Bristol July 8, 1921, the son of the late Dominic and Maria (Colella) Raponey. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a veteran of WWII, serving in the Navy. He worked at Metal Finishing Technology for 35 years before he retired in 1984. He was a member of St. Anthony Church and was an usher for 50 years at the church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. A devoted husband and father he derived great enjoyment from attending sporting events, especially those in which his sons and grandchildren were involved. He had a love for sports and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and the UConn Huskies. He was always in attendance at every musical performance or dance recital that featured a member of his family. He is survived by four sons, Joseph Raponey and his wife, Diane, of East Hampton, David Raponey and his wife, Laura, of Plainville, Armand Raponey and his wife, Leann, and Michael Raponey, both of Bristol; a brother, Dominic "Nick" Raponey Jr. of Bristol; two sisters, Pamela Lobaezenski and Armandina Masi; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jamie, Jenna, Erin, Kevin, Ryan and Alyssa; brothers and sisters-in-law Steven and Joan Venturo, Anthony Venturo, Angie and Vito Eramo, Ester St. Amand, Mary Lou Gualteri and Rena Failla; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Armand Raponey. A memorial Mass will be held Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Friends may call at Dunn Funeral Home, 191 West St., Bristol on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the staff at Sheriden Woods Health Care Center and Bristol Hospital for the excellent care given their father during his confinement. In addition, thanks go out to Central Connecticut Social Services and the Bristol Community Organization.
