Bristol - Mr. Lawrence E. Zahnke, 94, of Josephine Terrace, passed away June 18, 2014 at his home. He was the husband of the late Blanche M. (Masocco) Zahnke and were married for 52 years.
Larry was born on May 16, 1920 the son of the late Edward and Mary (Brauer) Zahnke. A lifelong resident of Bristol he graduated from Immanuel Lutheran School, Bristol High School and Wesleyan University were he played Varsity Soccer and was active in organized many activities at his fraternity. A day after graduating from college he started serving four years in the Army in World War II, he signed up for active reserve and served with the 1117th US Army Garrison until 1965 when he retired with the rank of Major.
He worked at Aetna Insurance Company, was a Tax Collector for the City of Bristol then became an Assessor of the Town of Plainville, retiring 1986. He and Gene Marchand were partners in the Laurel Association Real Estate and Insurance Agency.
He was a member at Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as trustee for many years and served on numerous broads and planning committees. He was elected Bristolâs 6th District Republican Party Chairman and member of the Town Committee and a member of the American Legion Post # 2. Larry loved to vacation at Cape Cod traveling with his dear friends, Don and Jackie Padlo. He enjoyed all forms of athletics, but the game of golf, was his most joy. Larry served many years as President, treasurer and other positions on the Broad of Directors at Pequabuck Golf Course and was awarded an honorary lifetime membership to the club in which he was a member since 1964. He also belonged to Central Connecticut Golf Association and organized state wide tournaments and activities.
He is survived by a sister, Gloria Herold and a brother, Gene and his wife Beverly Zahnke all of Bristol. Nieces and nephews, Dawn Parker and Kevin Tarallo of Bristol, Wesley and his wife Kerry Zahnke of Raleigh North Carolina, Gayle and her husband Robert Levine of West Hartford and Sheri Nadler and her husband Robert of Glen Mills, PA, Hal Herold of Bristol and Randy Herold and his wife Kathy of Davenport Center, NY.
The family would like to thank Interim Hospice and his special nurse, Linda Warden for their kindness. Especially, Akwasi Acheampons for his 24 hours a day care and friend for the past 3 years. He took care of every personal need and prayed with Larry every morning. Words canât say enough about how much he was appreciated.
A Memorial service will be held on June 24, 2014 at 11 AM at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bristol friends may call at the church from 10 AM until the time of the service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in West Cemetery. Dunn funeral home 191 West St., Bristol, CT is in charge of arrangements.
